Building enclosure commissioning · BECx

Understand how the
building enclosure works.

The roof, walls, windows and foundations help separate indoor conditions from the outdoors. I teach you how their connections affect water, air and heat movement, and how to organize the evidence that shows whether the enclosure meets the owner’s requirements.

For new entrants, designers, construction teams, commissioning staff and facility owners.

What this means

The envelope is a system.

Building enclosure commissioning (BECx), also called building envelope commissioning, follows performance requirements from planning through design, construction and operation. Learn why a roof-to-wall connection deserves the same attention as the materials on either side of it.

01

Define the expected performance.

Translate the owner’s needs into understandable requirements for air, water, thermal performance and durability. Connect those requirements to the design and the project’s acceptance criteria.

02

Read the details and transitions.

Follow the layers that control air, water and heat across roofs, walls, windows, doors and openings for pipes or other services. Practice recognizing missing information and asking a question the design or construction team can answer.

03

Connect observation and testing.

Understand how mockups, construction observations and agreed testing support verification. Learn to record the location, condition, evidence, responsible party and follow-up needed for a useful issue report.

04

Make the handover useful.

Connect resolved findings, test records, maintenance information and owner training. Explain what the records demonstrate and what still needs attention.

Training can connect ASHRAE Guideline 0’s commissioning process, ASTM E2813’s building enclosure commissioning practice and the requirements selected for your project.
