Master systems integration · Division 25 · Digital twins

Make the connections
work for the owner.

A building may have excellent equipment and still struggle when systems need to work together. I teach you how to connect the owner’s needs, the way systems exchange information, project responsibilities and records that show the connection works. Then explore how digital twins can support operations.

For controls specialists, commissioning staff, project leaders, owners and people new to integration.

The coordinating role

What is MSI?

A master systems integrator (MSI) helps coordinate how separate building systems exchange information and deliver the agreed functions. Master systems integration includes understanding interfaces, aligning the people responsible and checking that the complete connection works.

The specification structure

What is Division 25?

Division 25, Integrated Automation, organizes specification requirements for integrated systems. It can describe interfaces, data, sequences, responsibilities and verification. The project documents define the MSI’s actual scope and how it connects with other trades.

Follow the requirement across the interface. Keep responsibility visible.
01

Start with the owner’s use.

Define what an operator or owner needs to see, control, compare or respond to. Turn that need into a clear requirement and an agreed way to demonstrate it.

02

Map the interfaces.

Trace information between the building automation system (BAS), electrical monitoring, meters and other platforms. Explain protocols, gateways and data mapping in the context of the intended function.

03

Assign the handoffs.

Identify who supplies the information, configures each side, approves network access, resolves defects and supports the connection after handover. Practice building a responsibility matrix: a table showing who does what at each connection.

04

Verify usable information.

Check names, units, scaling, timestamps, update rates, alarms and response to lost communication. Connect source evidence to the value or behavior the end user receives.

Digital twins

Connect the facility model to the real building.

A building digital twin connects a digital representation of systems and their relationships with information from the physical facility. Learn how trustworthy live and historical data can help explain operation and explore what could happen under different conditions.

Start with a useful question: could a proposed operating change improve performance? Identify the model, commissioning records and meter data needed. Compare the model’s behavior with verified observations before relying on it for operating or testing decisions.
